Our law is founded in oral discourse . . . a tradition handed down over centuries. In a profession where the practitioner must be orator as well as counsel, the single most important skill a lawyer possesses is the ability to communicate effectively with other human beings. but, the single most frequent complaint clients have about their lawyers concerns communication. These complaints run the gamut from not returning phone calls to not listening . . . from misinterpreting the problem to misquoting . . . from insinuating the lawyer's ego and own needs to not telling the story right! If not addressed, these problems become serious professional, and even ethical, violations. Skilled communication, on the other hand, can enhance personal credibility, increase interpersonal effectiveness and increase professional image. Word of Mouth: A Workshop in the Art and Ethics of Oral Communication for Lawyers, facilitated by Graham Thatcher, covers what lawyers don't learn in law school. It demonstrates why lawyers have problems with communication, what problems "thinking like a lawyer" can create, and how communication really works. Participants learn how to read the signs of spoken and unspoken language to respond more effectlvely. This program provides a fresh approach to help participants discover personal tools they can use to become more effective communicators in all aspects of practice and in every professional context. Word of Mouth: A Workshop in the Art and Ethics of Oral Communication for Lawyers, has been approved for CLE credit (including ethics and professionalism credit) in several states. The program can be presented in a half or full day format. The half day program covers theory and demonstration only. The full day schedule also includes sessions for attendee participation and presentation. CLE credit for the workshop ranges from three to seven hours and the schedule can be adjusted to fit individual state requirements and needs of the sponsoring organization. Sample schedules, programs and study materials are available on request.
