This play focuses on the major issues with which Thurgood Marshall wasinvolved during his working life as a lawyer and his time as an Associate Justice on the U.S. Supreme Court. It will be followed by responses from panelists and audience discussion to explore questions relating to diversity, civil rights, equal justice under the law and how these issues relate to the ethical responsibilities of those in the legal profession.

Presenters will provide an overview of the legal issues in Brown v. Board of Education as well as various more current desegregation and civil rights cases in Minnesota, including Holman v. Martinez, NAACP v.State of Minnesota and Xiong v. State of Minnesota.

Professors Orfield and Biernat will provide views on desegregation and related social and legal policy from the decision in Brown v. Board to the present.

Key Note Speaker: Julius Chambers Respondent: John Stuart
Mr. Chambers will review the major civil rights cases which he and his firm have litigated over the past forty years, including Swann v. Charlotte Mecklenburg Board of Education, Griggs v. Duke Power Co.and
Albemarle Paper Co. v. Moody. Mr. Stuart will offer views of civil rights in the arena of public defense.

Key Note Speaker: Linda Greene
Professor Greene will discuss Thurgood Marshall's life as a lawyer and Supreme Court Justice, the impact he had on the legal and social systems of his time and review the legacy he left for future legal professionals.
